About This Role:

The Senior Finance Manager at Black Visions will be the organization’s lead staff accountant. They will work alongside the Director of Finance and the Lead Finance Coordinator to maintain the organization's fiscal health and administer our annual operating budget of ~$4 million/year. The Senior Finance Manager will only supervise the Lead Finance Coordinator, but they will be expected to lead all staff in properly handling our cash, checks, accounts payables, accounts receivables, financial statements, and tax reporting obligations, including our payroll taxes. 

 

The ideal candidate for this role will be trustworthy and extraordinarily detail oriented. They will also hold some advanced degree, certification, or credential in the field of public finance and/or nonprofit management, such as a Master of Accounting (MA), a Master of Business Administration (MBA), or, most preferably, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license active in the State of Minnesota.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

 

Audit and Compliance 

  • Stay informed of changing IRS rules and regulations.
  • Lead on complying with all relevant local, state, and federal laws
  • Prepare the annual Internal Audit File for the external audit firm
  • Review the findings of the annual audit, learn from them, and share them with others

 

Accounts Payables and Receivables Management 

  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of all transactions
  • Monitor our cash flow, income, and expenditures for irregularities
  • Liaise with our bookkeeper on journal entries needed to our books
  • Lead weekly reconciliation meetings with all other members of the Finance team
  • Produce timely and accurate statements of financial activity for pod/team leaders
  • Process all donations of cash and checks and deposit them into our bank account

 

Budgeting, Financial Planning, and Quantitative Analysis 

  • Assist the Director of Finance with the annual budgeting process
  • Create spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations needed to support the process
  • Enter financial data collected from all staff into QuickBooks for the next fiscal year
  • Analyze monthly variances in budget-to-actuals for evidence of overspending
  • Help team leaders and department directors make plans for adjusting their spending

 

Staff Education, Management, and Supervision 

  • Supervise the Lead Pex and Payables Coordinator
  • Direct 1099 finance consultants and contractors
  • Provide appropriate financial guidance and technical assistance to teams
  • Ensure compliance with the financial policies and accounting procedures manual

 

Teamwork and Collaboration (shared with all other staff members)

  • Join weekly All Staff meetings and Program Staff Pod meetings
  • Develop agendas, facilitate meetings, and handle follow-up as needed
  • Support the Abolitionist and Environmental Justice movement ecosystems fighting for Black liberation in Minnesota
  • Share work with others on staff while respecting delegated levels of authority
  • Participate in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of all staff trainings and events, as well as, All Hands Deck (AHOD) Moments
  • Use our resources in ways that comply with local, state, and federal law, as well as, the moral principles of environmental justice and resource stewardship
  • Other duties as assigned by your staff pod

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

 Qualifications include…

 

  • Belief in the mission, vision, and core values underpinning our work
  • an authentic love for Black people and a genuine desire to be in principled struggle
  • at least 3 years of experience working in accounting or financial management
  • at least 1 year of experience working at a charity, nonprofit, or community group
  • strong financial, numeracy, and Excel skills, including accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to operate complex financial systems
  • excellent time management skills with the ability to manage demanding priorities and deadlines
  • outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to explain financial information to non-finance staff in a clear and engaging manner
  • excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work individually as well as in a team, sometimes under considerable pressure

 

Our Ideal Candidate…

 

  • Is an active or retired Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the State of Minnesota
  • Is familiar with Quickbooks, Dext, and/or Melio
  • Has strong organizational skills, including planning, developing, implementing, and maintaining financial administrative systems
  • Has good judgment, including an appreciation of how to handle sensitive and confidential issues
  • Has the ability to build consensus and work in coalition with others.

LOCATION

Black Visions is a hybrid workplace. Our physical location is in Minneapolis, MN. All Black Visions staff must have a home address in Minnesota.

 

SALARY

Annual base salary is $80,640/year. 

A cost of living adjustment is enacted once every year equal to the rate of inflation or higher.
